Abstract:Getting your new vinyl tufted car carpet installed...
Getting your new vinyl tufted car carpet installed right is not as difficult as it sounds. You just need to know a few things about the type of tufted car carpet you are looking for.
A long time ago automobile manufacturers used to sew separate pieces of carpeting together in order to fit around tranny humps, shifters and protrusions. They would cut out the carpet to the size they needed and then place it in the car and sew it to the floor pans.
Now, instead of sewing the pieces together they use molded auto carpets to create the perfect fit. Molded automotive carpets are basically shaped to the dimensions of the car's floor pans and then are placed in the car and secured to the floors with seat belts and door sills.
The two most common styles of molded carpet are 80-20 loop and cut pile. The former is 80% rayon 20% nylon and has the texture of berber house carpeting.
Cut pile is more plush than 80-20 loop and is a more popular choice in modern cars because it hides the bends and curves in the car's floor pan better.
ACC 80/20 Loop (aka 80/20) is a classic 80% rayon 20% nylon tufted car carpet that was in most cars from the mid 1950's through the mid 1970's. It contains 24 ounces of yarn per square yard and is backed with polyethylene or latex.
Colback : A thermally bonded nonwoven polyester and/or polypropylene material that is a primary backing for most molded car carpeting applications. The backing helps keep the yarn in its place and makes sure it stays the same color throughout the life of the carpet.
